Michael Jackson's Dad: 'Our Family Is Strong'
29 Jun 09 - News Headlines
Michael Jackson's father has been talking about the death of his most famous son - saying in a television interview his family was "pretty strong" and was coping with its loss.
Joe Jackson said Michael's legacy would leave him larger in death than he was in life.
Slowly but surely Jackson is being rehabilitated into the celebrity world that had all but shunned him in recent years.
Last night's Black Entertainment Television awards was transformed into a Michael love-fest attended by his father.
Meanwhile, perhaps more significantly, the ubiquitous celebrity open-top bus tours of Los Angeles are diverting past a new landmark - the rented home where the singer died.
A week ago Michael Jackson could not have given away a record; he now tops charts across the world.
The family remain ensconced in their home in Los Angeles planning his funeral, which may happen on Wednesday, according to family friends.
His mother Katherine has emerged from time to time waving to fans as she is whisked away.
The family are also overseeing their own investigation into the events that led to the singer's death.
A second post mortem investigation has been carried out and it is reported that they still have concerns about how Michael Jackson died.
Toxicology reports may give a better indication as to what happened to the 50-year-old.
Michael's father said in a statement that he and his wife have the "personal and legal authority to act, and solely ... have authority for our son and his children".
Dr Conrad Murray, the doctor who treated Jackson, has been interviewed by the police for a second time. His lawyers insist he did nothing wrong.
One of his lawyers told news agencies that Michael Jackson still had a faint pulse and his body was warm when Dr Murray found him in bed and not breathing.
Edward Chernoff said that Dr Murray never prescribed or gave Jackson the drugs Demerol or Oxycontin. He denied reports suggesting Murray gave Jackson drugs that contributed to his death.
The question being asked by family and friends who saw him just hours before he died is quite simple - what happened?
Top musical events producer Ken Ehrlich was with Michael Jackson at a rehearsal for the star's upcoming London concerts and says he was focused and looking forward to staging what was effectively a massive comback
I met him at his Beverly Hills home. His office walls are adorned with a Who's Who of celebrity pictures stretching back decades. He is in no doubt that sometime between their meeting and the call to emergency services, alerting the authorities that the singer was dying, something happened.
"He was focused and he was relaxed and he was looking forward to this event. He was involved with the production, and the choreography and the singing were superb.
"I simply could not believe it when the news came through. This was one of the best meetings we ever had."
From around the world fans are still arriving in Los Angeles to pay their respects. All are hoping that there will be a major celebration of the singer's life.
The Los Angeles police department says it has contingency plans for a major public event for tens of thousands of people.
Rumours abound that it will take place at the Coliseum Stadium that holds over 90,000 people and was the host venue of the LA Olympics.
Michael would have loved that.
