Roddick Stands Between Murray And Final

03 Jul 09 - Sports

Andy Murray will need to get past former world number one and Grand Slam Champion Andy Roddick in Friday's Semi final if he is to reach his first Wimbledon final.

The British number one has already equalled Tim Henman's achievement of reaching the last four at Wimbledon, but Murray will hope to go one better by setting up a final with Roger Federer or Tommy Haas.

The world number three goes in to the Roddick clash with a physical advantage, Roddick having scraped through an emotional five-set quarter-final when Murray needed just three.

Roddick and Murray have met on eight previous occasions with Murray the victor in six of those matches. Despite that record Roddick does have one crucial advantage over the Scot - his experience.

This will be Roddick's fourth Wimbledon semi-final, and twice before the American has made it all the way to the final.

The American's Grand Slam titles both came at the U.S Open which he won in 2000, the year he turned pro, and 2005.

Roddick is also the biggest server on tour, holding the record for the fastest serve ever at over 150mph, and he served 43 aces in his quarter final win over Lleyton Hewitt.

There are some concerns that weather may again close the roof over centre court.

Murray put an end to any idea he was unhappy at having to play under the roof on Monday against Wawrinka: "I was a bit disappointed that it was made out I was complaining about the roof, I wasn't at all....I was asked how the conditions were and I gave an honest and pretty fair assessment of how it played.

"It does play slower, which is not a complaint. It's more humid in there. It doesn't make a difference top how I'm going to approach the match."
