Australia Struggle In Preparation For The Ashes

03 Jul 09 - Sports

Australia had a tough day in the field at New Road as the England Lions ended the second day 302 for 6 off 81 overs.

Brett Lee's five-wicket burst either side of tea led an inspired fight-back for Australia against the Lions.

Stephen Moore stood out for the Lions getting 120 for 176 before being caught by Brad Haddin off the bowling of Brett Lee.

Australia were dismissed for 358 before lunch and had been desperate for a breakthrough after Moore and Joe Denly put on 172 for the first wicket.

It was Moore's first century of the season.

Meanwhile England XI closed the second day of their warm up match against Warwickshire 185 for two off 53 overs, at Edgbaston.

James Anderson took a five wicket haul to help dismiss the Bears for 102 and establish a 188-run first innings lead after the hosts had resumed 31-1.

The 26 year old continues his good form for England this summer following his nine-wicket haul in the second Test against the West Indies at Durham.

England went on to secure a 373-run advantage by the end of the second day.

Cardiff is the venue for the first Ashes Test on the 8th July.
