Apples And Mayors: Boris In EastEnders
20 Jul 09 - Showbiz
Boris Johnson faces a right royal bust-up when he pops into the Queen Vic for a pint.
The London Mayor makes a guest appearance on EastEnders - and has a run-in with fiery landlady Peggy Mitchell, played by Barbara Windsor.
In the scene, Peggy - who recently got involved in local politics - endures a frustrating time trying to track down the mayor during a visit to Walford.
She returns to the Queen Vic promising to give him a piece of her mind if she ever sees him, when he walks in the pub...
Boris said: "EastEnders is a true London icon and I was delighted to highlight to its huge audience the part the mayoralty plays in the city's rich tapestry.
"It was, of course, a tremendous honour to step inside that most venerable of London landmarks, the Queen Vic, and share a scene with another of the capital's icons, the fabulous Barbara Windsor."
EastEnders Executive Producer Diederick Santer said: "We do our best to reflect contemporary London, and we hope that meeting the Mayor will help us stay ahead with the latest London stories, policies and developments.
"We couldn't let the visit pass without the Mayor entering London's most famous pub, the Queen Vic, and meeting its formidable and politically-active landlady Peggy Mitchell."
The scene featuring Mr Johnson was filmed on Friday and will be shown this autumn.
He is not the first celebrity to walk into Albert Square.
Comedian David Walliams made an appearance in 2003 and Robbie Williams has appeared in the background in a scene at the Queen Vic.
But the show has some way to go until it can compete with its Australian rival Neighbours in the celebrity guest stakes.
Over the years guest stars including Clive James, Shane Warne, Lily Allen and Chris Lowe of The Pet Shop Boys have all appeared in the show.
