Grudge Match: Wayne Bridge v John Terry
27 Feb 10 - UK News
Wayne Bridge and John Terry meet on the football pitch today - with all eyes on the pre-game handshake.
The match - live on Sky Sports HD1 (12.45ko) - comes just two days after Bridge announced he was pulling out of the England squad because of Terry.
The player said his place among England's elite was now 'untenable' and 'potentially divisive'.
Manchester City defender Bridge has made his decision following revelations about Terry's alleged affair with his former partner, Vanessa Perroncel.
The affair led to Terry - formerly a close friend of Bridge - being stripped of the England captaincy earlier this month.
City manager Roberto Mancini announced that he will play against Terry's Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
"I hope that Wayne Bridge can play well," said the Italian.
"He's made a difficult decision I think. I respect his decision. I'm sorry for him and for England because it's important for a player to play in his national team."
Players including Argentinian Carlos Tevez have expressed public support for team-mate Bridge, adding to the tension around the game.
Terry, meanwhile, has endured boos and a drop in form since the revelations and can expect plenty of jeering from City's away support.
Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti insists the occasion will not affect his captain's performance.
"John Terry is a professional," he said.
"He will not have a problem staying focussed on the match. He has a good mentality and he will do the same to the end of the season."
For Chelsea, a win is crucial as it would move them four points clear of Manchester United.
Capello - who has said he will leave the door open to Bridge's inclusion in his World Cup plans - will name his England squad to face Egypt at around 8pm this evening.
Terry is expected to be in the squad. The game against the African champions is the first of three World Cup warm ups for England.
Further details of the remaining friendlies - possibly against Mexico and Japan - will be announced next week.
