Housebreaking in Scotland has fallen significantly over the last decade — down 57% since 2016-17, with 6,968 recorded crimes in 2025-26, the lowest level since 1971.
While the statistics don't tell us exactly why housebreaking has fallen, improvements in home security, better locks, alarms, CCTV and other preventative measures can all form part of a wider approach to making homes less attractive to criminals.
And with modern security systems becoming increasingly accessible, protecting your home doesn't have to be complicated.
We've teamed up with CSS, a Scottish security company that has been protecting homes and businesses since 1986.
CSS offers professionally installed home security systems, including monitored intruder alarms and CCTV, with 24/7 security monitoring available. Their systems are designed to act as a deterrent while giving you an additional layer of protection when you're at home, away from home or asleep.
So while crime figures are moving in the right direction, it's still worth asking yourself:
Could your home be better protected?
From a simple alarm system to monitored security and CCTV, CSS has a range of options designed around different homes and security needs.

An alarm is only part of the picture.
🔑 Keep your keys secure
Don't leave house or car keys somewhere they're easily visible or accessible from outside.
🔒 Lock up every time
Even if you're only popping out for a few minutes, make sure doors and windows are properly secured.
🚗 Protect your car too
Don't leave valuables on display and consider additional security if you have a keyless vehicle.
🏠 Make your home look occupied
If you're away, timers, lights and asking someone to collect your post can help avoid obvious signs that nobody is home.
🔐 Think of security as layers
Good locks, sensible habits, alarms, CCTV and other security measures can all work together to make your home and belongings harder to target.
