Spending on Stirling 20mph zones revealed

New data shows Stirling Council spent more than £110,000 setting up 20mph zones across the area last year.

The figures come from a Freedom of Information request by Central FM News.

The local authority has been rolling out the zones across the area, in a bid to improve safety.

The figures from the Freedom of Information request shows £5,803.12 was spent on 20mph zones between April 2023 and March 2024.

That number increased to £111,481.58 between April 2024 and March 2025.

Mark Ruskell is a Mid Scotland and Fife Green MSP - and has been campaigning for the limits:

"I think it's fantastic that Stirling Council is investing in making our streets safer by rolling out 20mph speed limits. This is happening across Scotland now, the Scottish Government have been helping to fund it and at the end of the day this will save lives.

We've seen in Wales that the introduction of 20mph has cut the accident rate on urban roads by 25%. That means that there are people that are alive today because of 20 mile an hour zones being put in place. We need to see this rollout happen across Scotland.

I think it's had a huge impact already on a number of rural communities across Stirling and I'm really looking forward to the project being completed."
