Concern over Grangemouth jobs

"New and decent" jobs should be created for workers affected by the closure of the Grangemouth oil refinery.

That's the message from the STUC trade union.

Petroineos has announced the site will shut - with a date to be confirmed.

Yesterday, bosses said the refinery has lost more than £800 million since 2013.

A report has been published by the Just Transition Commission.

Roz Foyer, General Secretary, STUC said:

“The Commission’s report reflects the reality of workers experience on the ground. For all its rhetoric, we have yet to see the Scottish Government’s words translate into policies which are having a positive impact.

“The recent shock announcement of the Grangemouth refinery is a clear example of the UK and Scottish Government’s failure to deliver an industrial strategy which transitions us to a low carbon economy.  The skills and experience of workers at the site should be at the forefront of the transition but instead these workers are at risk of losing their jobs and livelihoods.

“We would echo the calls by the Commission today that it is now time for the government to deliver action, not words, including by leveraging public investment to guarantee new and decent work, recognise trade unions, build local supply chains, and increase public control in the economy."
