Public meetings on school transport changes

Public meetings are being held, with more than 1,000 schoolkids in Falkirk set to lose their free bus travel.

Falkirk Council has voted to increase the distance at which children are eligible for free school transport.

It means pupils would have to live more than three miles from school to receive free travel.

Grangemouth High is hosting a meeting next Tuesday - with further forums planned for St.Mungo's and Denny High.

Falkirk Council's website says:

"As a Council, we must save c£67m over the next four years. That means hard decisions need to be made to ensure we can continue to pay for essential services.

We are also facing a projected overspend of £750k for school transport in 2022/23 due to the increased costs associated with bus contracts.

If approved, the proposals would save an estimated £625k (August 2023 to March 2024) and bring our free home-to-school entitlement more in line with other Scottish councils and the statutory guidance.

We also hope the changes will encourage children and young people to either walk, wheel or cycle to school via the nearest available safe route."
