Cancer check waiting times increase

The average wait time across the Forth Valley for a key cervical cancer check has risen by 96% since 2019.

New data shows the average wait for a colposcopy is now 49 days.

It's a follow-up procedure for abnormal smear test results, that can detect cervical cancer.

One patient waited more than four months for the procedure.

In 2019, the average wait across NHS Forth Valley for a colposcopy was 25 days.

An NHS Forth Valley statement says:

Following a smear test, results are carefully assessed by our specialist doctors and nursing staff. If the result is deemed urgent, a colposcopy appointment would be offered  within two weeks. For routine appointments, patients can expect to be seen within eight weeks. We are committed to providing timely care and ensuring that all patients receive the attention they need based on the urgency of their results.  We would encourage anyone who has concerns or questions regarding their care and treatment to contact our Patient Relations team.

Stirling and Strathallan MP Chris Kane says:

"For those awaiting crucial follow-up tests, each day without an appointment brings stress, anxiety, and sleepless nights. The SNP Government must act urgently to get waiting lists down, cancer doesn’t wait."
